This paper is highlighting the different approaches on regional development from the point of view of economic growth theories and European integration effects, analysing the contribution of the European Union cohesion policy to the economic growth of the cohesion countries and to reducing the development gap between their regions. It tries to identify the success factors in the cohesion countries performance of using Structural Funds since 1989 in order to draw lessons on how Romania could make an effective use of these funds after its accession and catch up with the other Member States.
