The paper analyzes the way in which evolved the concept of autonomous agent in the cognition sciences [the functional and symbolic approach, the behavioural approach and morphodynamic approach.] The lacunae and moreover the complementarity of issues raised by the three above mentioned approaches naturally stimulate the study of their integration within a more sophisticated conceptual framework that has more powerful hypothesis enabling a deeper understanding of the autonomy and providing polyvalent, stronger and better adapted artefacts. The new conceptual framework is inspired by the theory of complex adaptive systems that focusses on the processes and not on the collections of states cut out according to ad-hoc criteria.
