The paper discusses the empirical methodology developed by labor economists in order to analyze the gender wage gap. It presents and appraises the standard Oaxaca Blinder decomposition techniques and their theoretical foundations. The paper also discusses the more recent techniques of dynamic decomposition introduced by Juhn, Murphy and Pierce (1991, 1993) which take into account the influence of changes in wage structure on the evolution of gender wage differentials.
